The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) was officially commissioned on the 23rd of July, 1983 by former President Aliyu Shehu Shagari, GCFR. The hospital is the largest tertiary health care institution in Nigeria with 1305 bed capacity Offering world class training, research and medical services.

To provide curative and preventive health care through outreach, training and research in an efficient and effective manner using motivated and valued staff and modern technology.

The Architect of Modern UMTH
Professor Ahmed Ahidjo became the 8th Chief Medical Director/ Chief Executive officer of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on 3rd September, 2018. Prof Ahmed Ahidjo on assumption of office re-emphasised the main thrust of the hospital establishment which is research, training and healthcare service delivery.
